KEY TAKEAWAYS & TL;DR

  • Nuho India 3D prints custom desk name plates in PLA+ at 215 °C in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, with 24–48 hour manufacturing and despatch.
  • A 150–200 mm desk name plate weighs about 20–40 g and costs ₹129–₹349, depending on size, colour count and custom shape.
  • Letters are fused to a continuous backing plate at print time, so there is no thin acrylic-style cut-out that chips or lifts.
  • PLA+ is tough and water-resistant indoors but softens in a hot car — never leave a printed name plate on a dashboard.
  • Custom shapes and multi-colour plates carry no tooling cost, so the second identical plate costs the same as the first.

Custom Desk Name Plates in India: Office and Home

Custom desk name plates in India are small, personalised boards that sit on a desk and identify a person, a team or a cabin. Nuho India 3D prints them in PLA+ at 215 °C in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, in custom shapes and colours. Most plates measure 150–200 mm across, weigh 20–40 g, cost ₹129–₹349, and are manufactured and despatched in 24–48 hours.

That is the short version. The longer one matters more if you are buying: which material actually suits a desk, why the cheap acrylic plate at the stationery shop cracks at thin letters, how a PLA+ plate is printed, how an office plate differs from one on a child's desk at home, and what all of it costs in rupees and hours.

Why does a desk need a name plate?

A nameplate is an object that identifies and displays a person's or a product's name. Wikipedia makes a useful distinction that most buyers blur: name tags are worn on a person, while nameplates are mounted on an object or a space — a desk, a door, a wall. A desk name plate therefore does a specific job. It tells a visitor, a new joiner or a courier who sits where, without anyone having to ask.

In an office the job is professional: front-desk reception, a cabin door, a hot-desking bay, a training-room seat. At home the job is warmer: a child's study table, a home-office corner, a grandparent's favourite chair-side table. The same object, printed the same way, serves both — the difference is entirely in the wording, the shape and the colour.

What material should a custom desk name plate be made from?

Four materials dominate Indian desk plates, and each one wins somewhere. Here is the honest comparison, including where the alternatives beat PLA+.

PLA is the most widely used filament in fused-deposition 3D printing because it combines a low melting point with good stiffness and layer adhesion. Wikipedia's reference on polylactic acid puts its density at roughly 1210–1430 kg/m³ and its melting point at about 150–160 °C — far above any office or home, and far below the 215 °C at which Nuho India extrudes it.

The + in PLA+ is the part worth understanding. PLA+ is a blend of plain PLA with impact modifiers, which trades a little stiffness for toughness. Plain PLA snaps cleanly when overloaded; PLA+ bends, absorbs the knock and stays whole. For a plate that gets pushed around a desk, dropped into a bag, or handed to a child, that is the whole reason to print in PLA+ rather than the cheapest filament available.

PLA+ vs acrylic: the narrow-letter problem

Acrylic is the material most people picture when they hear "name plate" — the clear or black sheet with white cut letters. Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic, also known as acrylic glass or polymethyl methacrylate.

Acrylic has one real advantage: it looks glossy and premium straight out of the cutter. It has one real weakness, and it shows up exactly where desk plates live — at narrow letters. When acrylic is cut into letters, the thin strokes of an i, l, t or a company monogram become the weakest points, and those are the first to chip when a plate is knocked or flexed. Glued-on acrylic letters can also lift at the corner over a few years of cleaning.

PLA+ sidesteps that. Letters are printed into a continuous backing plate in one pass, so there is no glued joint and no thin cut-out to snap. The letterforms are fused to the base at 215 °C during printing, which means the plate is one solid piece rather than eight small pieces stuck to a sheet. That is the difference you cannot see in a photograph and notice immediately after two years of daily use.

Where acrylic wins: pure flat gloss and the lowest possible unit cost on a simple rectangle with no custom shape. If you need 500 identical plain rectangles, a sheet cutter will beat a printer on price. If you need a custom silhouette, a logo, two colours, or letters that survive handling, PLA+ wins.

How is a PLA+ desk name plate made?

The process at Nuho India is short and repeatable:

  1. You send the text and shape. A name, a designation, a company name or a logo outline, plus any shape you want the plate to follow.
  2. A mock-up is approved. You sign off on spelling, font and colour before anything is printed — this is where most mistakes are caught, not after.
  3. The plate is 3D printed in PLA+ at 215 °C. Extrusion temperature sits in the standard PLA window and is held steady for the whole print.
  4. Letters are fused to a continuous backing plate. No gluing, no separate cut letters, no assembly step that can fail later.
  5. Manufacturing and despatch in 24–48 hours, in India, from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

A simple 150 mm plate typically prints in well under an hour; a taller two-part stand takes longer. The 24–48 hour figure covers the whole queue, printing and despatch — not just the press of a button.

Desk name plates for the office

Office plates are the commercial heart of the category, and they have real design constraints:

  • Size. A reception plate or a cabin-door plate reads best at 150–200 mm wide. A personal desk plate for a hot-desking bay can drop to 120–150 mm.
  • Standing. Plates either lie flat, sit in a printed wedge stand, or are printed with an integral fold-out foot. An integral foot is sturdier because it is the same piece of plastic.
  • Contrast. Dark text on a light plate, or a light text inlay on a dark plate, keeps the name readable across a desk without the visitor leaning in.
  • Consistency. Order the whole bench at once so font, colour and thickness match across team members.

If your desk setup involves more than one object, the same printing run can cover it. Our 3D printed desk accessories for home offices covers pen cups, cable clips and trays that pair with a plate in the same colour.

Desk name plates for home and gifting

At home the brief changes and the plate stops being signage and becomes a gift. The most-requested versions are a child's name in a favourite colour for a study table, a couple's name for a housewarming, a thank-you plate for a teacher, and a small name block that doubles as a desk keepsake.

Because the design is printed rather than cut, almost any outline works — a cloud, a bookmark, a cricket bat, a pet silhouette, a monogram. For a wider set of ideas that pair with a plate, our guide to 3D printed desk decor in India covers organiser trays and shelf pieces, and the general 3D printed home decor ideas for desk, shelf and wall covers how these pieces sit together in a room.

Gifting tip: personalisation is the reason a printed plate beats a shop-bought one. A generic "Manager" plaque says nothing; a name, a team and a year says something permanent.

How much do custom desk name plates cost in India?

Prices depend on size, colour count, custom shape and finishing. The band below reflects what Nuho India charges; filament prices move, so treat the figures as a range and confirm before a bulk order.

PlateTypical sizePrints inPrice band
Single-name desk plate150 × 40 mm< 1 hour₹129–₹199
Name + designation180 × 50 mm< 1 hour₹199–₹299
Custom-shape plate with stand200 mm across1–2 hours₹299–₹349

The full range is on the Nuho India products page. For comparison, printed keychains and desk plates share the same material and colour options, so a matching set costs no extra tooling — the same PLA+ run covers both.

Care and the honest limitations

PLA+ is tough and water-resistant for indoor use, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth. It has one genuine limitation and it is worth stating plainly: like all PLA-based plastics, it has low heat resistance. A desk plate is fine on a desk, a shelf or a windowsill — it is not fine on a car dashboard, in a parked car in Indian summer, or in a hot-water wash. Keep plate and organiser off the dashboard and out of the sun and it will outlast the desk it sits on.

The second honest note is cost at volume. For a handful of plates, printing wins on flexibility and finish. For hundreds of identical flat rectangles with no custom shape, sheet acrylic can still be cheaper per unit. If your requirement is genuinely that, buy acrylic; if it is a shape, a colour and letters that survive handling, PLA+ is the better answer.

How do you order a custom desk name plate?

Send the name, wording and any logo outline, approve the mock-up, and the plate goes into the print queue. Manufacturing and despatch take 24–48 hours in India, with courier transit after that depending on your pincode. Multi-colour and fully custom shapes are possible with no tooling cost, which is the practical advantage of printing over cutting: the shape is free, and the second one is identical to the first.
